LOST and FOUND: Belief and Doubt in Contemporary Pictures looks at artists engaging with the concept of pictures in the era after the "death and resurrection of painting" in which images in any traditional capacity have become impossible in a critical context. In light of this impossibility comes the demand for a fresh investigation. LOST and FOUND showcases a generation of artist that are aware of the historical critique of the language of painting/images. This awareness informs their practice and a traversal of the liminal space between belief/doubt structures their conceptual framework. The show features painting (figurative, abstract and text), print media, transfers, collage, video, drawing, fabric, and sculptural works.

The artists exhibited are Njideka Akunyili (New York, NY), Hartmut Austen (Detroit, MI), Jordan Buschur (Lincoln, NE), Tim Campbell (Washington, D.C.), Jesse Harrod (Chicago, IL), Yui Kugimiya (Brooklyn, NY), Doron Langberg (New Haven, CT), Nick Martin Carbondale, IL), Ryan Parker (Philadelphia, PA), Lauren Rice (Detroit, MI), Amy Sacksteder (Ypsilanti, MI), Naomi Safran-Hon (Brooklyn, NY), Sharon Servillio (Queens, NY)


Brian Barr received his BFA from the College or Creative Studies in Detroit and his MFA from American University in Washington, DC. Barr has exhibited his work at venues nationally in Detroit, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston and St. Louis among others. His work was recently featured in New American Paintings. Barr has also curated CONSTRUCTS at org Gallery in Detroit, and Detroit Muscle: New Aesthetic Trends from the Motor City at the Rueff Gallery at Purdue University. He is a regular contributor to The Studio Visit, an international webzine based in Washington DC.

...The future perfect is, in a sense, a grammatical combination of the future and the past. It is used to indicate an action that will have taken place before another action or point in the future; and it can also express probability or supposition about events or situations in the past. The exhibition Futuro Perfecto, which takes its title from one of the works on view, brings together the work of 19 artists and one collaborative, all alumni of the Skowhegan residency program for emerging visual artists. In the title work, a video log of abandoned construction sites, the camera advances forward while simultaneously zooming out, thus creating a shifting and unsettling expression of stasis. Likewise, many of the works on view share concerns related to the experience of historical and personal time today. Are we moving ahead or mired in quicksand? Is the present our escape from the unattainable past and the impending future? Can visual codes be recycled and repurposed? In the digital age, have "here" and "now" become avatars? The tectonics of today result from shifts between revolution and continuity, production and destruction, the global and the personal. The artists gathered here find new strategies to make these fault lines visible.
