Blood is black in moonlight

where it slicks the fur

& impossible to remove

from your nails. Clothing

will never come completely clean

& must be replaced.

In a broad field any movement

may catch your eye,

the wind's rustle, a startled bird.

(Rehearse each disturbance:

nothing matches.) Forget

the reckless careers of men,

their prodigious boredom.

Women scream because they have

been practicing, because

they have seen you

before, in their husbands' eyes.

An animal's fear smells

the same as that of humans,

though the heart beats faster.

Avoid still water

& peering into windows.

Never retrace your steps.

Renounce old haunts, homes of lovers.

Leave no trail for any hunter

except yourself. Hunger

down the scent of blood

to its conclusion. Scour

the bleeding world

for any traces of yourself

& it will empty

before you, retreating

into its own hollows,

& in that silence you will be alone.

Howl in wind-lashed parking lots

between the abandoned cars.

Remember there is blood

in everything, even the moon,

even when it seems

the only pale, pure, unbleeding thing.

The exhibition runs from 4/19 through 4/24; will be held at Silo Point.

Statement on the Sinny Group

The "Sinny" series of paintings are the most recent works to come out of my studio. While these paintings are still grounded in typography (the composition is generated by using text), they represent a dramatic shift in focus within my work. The compositions have been radically simplified and any direct textual references (such as Blake, Wittgenstein, the bible, etc) have been eliminated, so as to present a sheer blank space of undefined measure.
Conflict and inversion are still central ideas, and the paintings touch upon mental states such as forgetfulness and paranoia. Symmetry, frequently associated with balance and calm, here becomes a trap. Contrapposto, a formal device classically related to dynamic gesture and humanism, here becomes discomfort, disease, nausea.

The title of this series is taken from the Anthony Burgess story A Clockwork Orange. In Burgess' book, sinnies are macabre theaters where ultra-violent films are projected to rehabilitate criminal minds. These paintings might represent the theaters themselves, or perhaps are gaps for a violence that is outside the threshold of representation, a violence to which we are blind as it falls on the far edges of language. While the paintings refer to a contemporary violence (not a general abstraction of the idea), they insist upon inadequacy, masking the violence and pointing to its reality elsewhere.

The images exist both digitally and as paintings - the digital images are not studies, but separate works. Works date from '09 and '10, and the project first emerged during a residency in Paris last spring.

The following works are from the folios of artist Mark Jude. Jude is a prolific artist, philanthropist, philologist, and facsimilist, but little else is known of his background or biography. He was born and raised in the town of Columbus, Montana, and has spent his entire life within county limits. He currently lives and works on his ranch along the Stillwater River, just upstream from the city of his birth, where he breeds and raises hounds.

All works are undated, untitled lithographs.
